Chapter Forty-Three
PART 43: ➤ “Meeting the PLA Soldier” //
➤ “Threat to the Underground Cavern”
________________________________________
“Meeting the PLA Soldier”
- Vietnam -
(A jungle path. Pixabay. Free images.) |
Enjoying the
fresh air, he had gone on a walk through the trees down some faint trails until
he had run into a group of PLA soldiers. The soldiers had quickly arrested him,
seeing he was not wearing the gear a PLA soldier was supposed to wear. Sheng
had discarded it shortly after trusting only in Jesus to save him.
But, since
Sheng had made the mistake of going away from God’s best will, he had been
captured by the PLA. By a miracle of God, the PLA soldiers had released Sheng
and other Christian prisoners they had captured in Vietnam. The soldiers had
left the former captives and retreated down a jungle trail, disappearing into
the jungle. We will pick up the story where Sheng is on the trail with his new
Christian friends. A short while after all the PLA soldiers had left, a single
Chinese soldier had suddenly come running down the trail toward the Christians,
armed with a Type 95 machine gun.

Sheng found his
heart beating fast. Part of him wanted to run into the dense jungle foliage and
hide, but something seemed to be telling him to stay. He watched as a communist
PLA soldier, armed with grenades and a bullpup Type 95 machine gun, ran
down the path through the jungle, with his face directed toward Sheng and the
six other Christian men with him.
Two of the six
former prisoners darted off into the jungle as they saw the soldier rapidly
approaching. But, four remained behind and prayed silently. When the soldier
was twenty feet from them, he slowed to a gentle jog, and breathed somewhat
deeply. To Sheng’s surprise, the soldier’s gun was not aimed his way. The
soldier lowered it toward the ground, and then hesitated briefly before he
tossed it into the bushes twenty feet from the trail.

As the soldier
rid himself of his weapons, the two men, who had fled, slowly walked back onto
the trail, pushing branches out of their way. They cautiously observed the
scene that followed, not sure if this was a trap or not.
“What are you
doing?” Sheng asked.
“You were a
soldier, weren’t you?” the soldier asked Sheng, who also wore the jacket,
trousers, and boots of his combat uniform.
“I was,” Sheng
said, wondering what this man wanted.
“I want to be a
follower of Jesus, like you,” the soldier said, stepping forward slowly now. “Jesus
clearly protected you from my comrades. I read a Gospel tract that was lying on
the ground near my barracks five months ago. But, I didn’t take it seriously
until I saw you and your friends use God’s power to overcome your enemies. So,
I want to join you. I want to be a Christian too.”
“That is
wonderful news,” Sommat said as he stepped toward the soldier with a bright
smile creasing his cheeks. “I am Sommat, a pastor from Laos.” Sommat bowed
slighty toward the younger man, in a customary East-Asian greeting.
“I’m Wu,” the
soldier said, bowing slightly toward Sommat, in return. “How do I get saved
through Jesus?
“Salvation cannot
be by our own works,” Sommat said. “It is only by God’s grace, but sin cannot
be in God’s holy temple, which is Heaven. So, repenting from sin is important
for walking with God.”
“Isn’t that
works?” Wu asked.
“Repenting is not
works,” Sommat said graciously. “It is just receiving God’s grace and choosing
to follow Jesus. Repentance is choosing to obey God rather than the flesh, which
is the nature that wants to sin.”
“How do you obey
God instead of the nature that wants to sin? I want to know this God you serve.”
Wu said, genuinely curious.
“It happens by
trusting only in the blood of Jesus Christ to save you; and by choosing to
follow the leading of God’s conviction, which comes from the God’s Spirit; and
by obedience to the Holy Scriptures,” Sommat said, looking at the younger man
with fatherly love.
“What do I do to
be saved? I want God’s Spirit,” Wu said.
“Believe on the Lord
Jesus Christ with all your heart, and that only His blood can wash away your
sins, and that only Jesus Christ Himself can give you eternal life,” Sommat
said, stepping closer to the former soldier.
“How do I do
that, exactly?” Wu said, raising both hands, with his palms up.
Sommat said: “For
salvation, [1] just ask Jesus Christ to be your Savior and Lord; [2] confess
that only Jesus Christ’s blood can wash away your sins, and that Jesus died and
rose from the dead for our sins; [3] and follow the Holy Spirit’s conviction. Romans
10:8-10 says: ‘[8.] But what saith it? The word is nigh thee,
even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we
preach; 9. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt
believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be
saved. 10. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the
mouth confession is made unto salvation.’”
“What Bible verse
says that I should follow the Holy Spirit’s conviction?” Wu asked.
Sommat said, “Romans 8:14 says: ‘For as many as are led by
the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.’ And,
Galatians 5:18 says: ‘But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.’”
“Does that mean
when you are not under the law that you don’t need to repent from sin?” Wu
asked, scratching his chin.
“No, we do have to repent from sin,” Sommat said. “Repenting
from sin is forsaking it. Galatians 5:19-21 says:
‘[19.] Now the
works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication,
uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20. Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance,
emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21. Envyings, murders,
drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I
have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not
inherit the kingdom of God.’
“That’s sobering,”
Sheng said quietly as he listened in on the conversation between Wu and Sommat.
“The people who
willfully and stubbornly refuse to forsake any sin cannot enter Heaven,” Sommat
said. “Sadly, their destination would be Hell, if they are unwilling to turn from
a sin God is showing them to turn from.”
“Wait, Sommat,
are you teaching salvation by works?” Long, one of the three Vietnamese men in
the group, piped up. He was frowning as he studied the face of Sommat, his new
friend.
Turning to Long,
Sommat said gently, “Not at all. Repentance from sin is not works. It is
walking with Jesus. Jesus does not walk in willful rebellion against His Father
(God), and we cannot walk in willful rebellion against Jesus, if we are His
sheep. For, Jesus said, in John 10:4-5, these
words about Himself as a Shepherd: ‘[4.] And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth
before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. 5. And a
stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the
voice of strangers.’
“So, what if a
person doesn’t know what Jesus is telling them or don’t feel His conviction?”
Long said, still frowning.
“Have you gone
through trials or hardships which made you want to turn to God?” Sommat asked
Long.
“Yes,” Long said.
“Did you seek God
during those times?” Sommat said.
(A jungle or rainforest. Pixabay. Free images.) |
“Salvation is by
grace. That is true,” Sommat said. “But, Jesus never taught that Christians can
continue living in a state of willful sin, or willfully choosing to pursue sin,
and enter Heaven. In the book of Revelation, chapter 3, verse 5 says: ‘[5.] He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.’ [Revelation 3:5]
“Yes, Jesus won’t
blot out our names from the book of life,” Long said tensely.
“Who does Jesus
not blot out of the book of life?” Sommat said.
“Christians,”
Long said.
“What does the
verse say?” Sommat said.
“It says he who overcomes
won’t be blotted out,” Sheng piped up as he entered the conversation.
“Well, that’s
just a name for Christians,” Long said, glancing at Sheng and folding his arms
across his chest.
“Why would Jesus
need to mention about the overcomer’s name not being blotted out of the book of
life? If names could not be blotted out of the book of
life at all, why did Jesus only say that the overcomer’s name would not be
blotted out?” Sommat said to Long.
After that, a
silence lasted for a few moments, before Wu spoke. “It sounds like Christians
can leave their faith and no longer be signed up for Heaven.”
“That is right,
Wu,” Sommat said. “But, I wasn’t the one who said it. God said it through His
Holy Scriptures, the Bible. Would you like to receive Jesus Christ as your
personal Savior and Lord, now?”
“Yes,” Wu said,
nodding. “I think I understand how to pray now.”
With that, Wu
looked up toward the sky and said, “Dear Jesus Christ, I want you to be my
Savior and Lord. I want to follow you wherever you send me, and I trust only in
your blood to save me and cleanse me from sin. I believe that no one but you
can save me from sin and can give me eternal life, now and in Heaven. I believe
that you died and rose from the dead, like the Bible says, and that you are my
God and Savior. I ask you to be the Lord of my life. In your Name, Jesus Christ’s
Name, amen.”
Silence followed
and all eyes were looking at the young Chinese soldier as he began to smile. Wu
felt peace descend upon him. It was a slight amount of peace, but it was
noticeable. Then, Wu opened his mouth and prayed:
“I want to know
you, God. I want to know your power and Presence. There is no one like you, who
has the power to keep wicked men from harming your people, who trust you. And,
there is no one like you who created everything by speaking it into existence.
I want to know you personally and deeply. Thank you for Jesus Christ and for
his death and resurrection. I love you because you first loved me. In the name
of Jesus. Amen.”
“Have you prayed
before?” Minh, one of the three Vietnamese men present, said.
“I’ve prayed one
time that if God were real, that He would reveal Himself to me,” Wu said with
some excitement in his voice. “I didn’t actually believe that He would, but He
certainly did just a few minutes ago. I saw the miracle of your handcuffs
falling off and the soldiers leaving you behind as they walked down the trail.
I thought it was weird at first, but then, I realized that it was an act of God
to deliver you and to show me that He is real.”
“Amen, brother,”
Bounkong, a Laotian, said as he walked toward the young Chinese soldier and
patted him on the back. “It is good to have another brother in Christ. Praise
be to God that you received His free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ!
This brings great joy to my heart. It says in the Bible that when someone is
saved, there is great joy in Heaven. God is rejoicing over you.”
Long glanced at
Wu and shook his head slowly before he turned away to look at some butterflies
lighting on a bush nearby. No one noticed the look on his face, but if they
had, they would have seen his face tightened up, expressing disgust. He felt
disgusted that Sommat was teaching the need for repentance.
Deep in his
heart, Long didn’t want to truly give God the bitterness he felt for his
father, who had verbally abused and hit him, and had beat up Long’s mother in
drunken fits of rage. Long didn’t think that he needed to forgive his father,
but the bitterness he held onto was slowly eating away at him like a deadly
parasite.
“Wow,” Wu said. “That
is awesome. I wish my sister and parents in China could be here to see the
power of God. I really wish that they would make Jesus their Savior too.”
“That would be
wonderful. But, there is a great revival happening in China, I’ve heard,”
Bounkong said, with a twinkle in his eyes. “Many thousands are getting saved
each day. The Chinese government cannot stop the Gospel, for God is greater
than they and greater than all the evil spirits who seek to enslave men.”
Just as Bounkong
was finishing his statement, Sheng heard God’s loving, quiet voice speak to him,
saying, “My son.”
“Yes, Abba Father
God,” Sheng said.
“I want you to
have the group hurry as quickly as you can, and get back to the base,” Abba God
said. “I will guide you how to get there. You need to hurry, for Chinese
soldiers are in hot pursuit, and they will stop at nothing to get a hold of you
and lock you up, for you have humiliated them, and they are very angry. Do not
fear, but go, My son, and I will be with you.”
Sheng thanked the
Lord, and then turned to his new friends, and explained the situation.
“God told you
that the PLA soldiers are seeking to lock us up?” Wu said, amazed.
“Yes, and we need
to hurry,” Sheng said with some concern in his voice.
“My son, do not
fear,” Abba God said. “I am with you. I will guide you in what to do, but you
need to have your friends follow you down the trail, and I will guide you where
to go. And, I the Lord your God and Abba Father have spoken.”
“Yes, Father God,”
Sheng said.
“Brothers,” Sheng
said, “we need to hurry. God doesn’t want us to fear, but He does want us to
hurry. Follow me. God has shown me the way back to the underground base I came
from.”
“You came from an
underground base?” Wu said, surprised.
“Yes. I’ll tell
you more about it later. Come,” Sheng said as he started walking quickly down
the path.
The others
followed, increasing their pace to keep up. Then, Sheng started jogging at a
slow jogging pace, and the others increased their speed.
As they headed
down the jungle trail, some bushes rustled quietly, and a Vietnamese man peered
through the dense foliage at the group which had just passed by him. The man
worked as a civilian scout or jungle guide to the imperial PLA soldiers. He
observed the Christians with intense concentration, like a tiger studying its
prey. His goal was to follow them and report their whereabouts to the PLA so
they could close in for the “kill.” And, he would be paid well for doing so.

“Threat to the Underground Cavern”
- Vietnam -
(A cavern. Pixabay. Free images.) |
“Is everyone at
Daniel chapter 3?” Guang Yan asked the small group, as he scanned to see if
they were on the same page. He wore a long changshan tunic and grew a
long, white beard, which came down to his chest, and made him look somewhat
like a Biblical patriarch. And, while his beard was long, the hair on his head
was about two inches in length.
“Yes,” Quang, a
Vietnamese man, said.
They had been
praying for his protection, but now they had felt it was time to focus on what
God’s Word had to say. Some men and women from the encampment in the voluminous
cavern joined them as they had a Bible study. Teeth-like stalactites descended
from the cavern ceiling toward corresponding stalagmites on the rocky floor. A
miraculous light from God illuminated the limestone walls and features, and
provided good reading light for the people.
Guang Yan cleared
his throat and said: “Daniel chapter 3 says, starting in verse 12:
‘[12.] There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs
of the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; these men, O king,
have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image
which thou hast set up.
13. Then
Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abednego. Then they brought these men before the king. 14. Nebuchadnezzar spake
and said unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, do not ye
serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?
15. Now if ye be
ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut,
psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the
image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same
hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall
deliver you out of my hands?’”
The giant cavern,
which was connected to an old, underground, Vietcong base, seemed safe from the
watchful eyes of the imperial Chinese government, but the obscurity of this
base was going to be tested as the PLA now secretly tracked Sheng and his
friends as they were hurrying toward the underground base.
