Chashaq (khaw-shak') in Deuteronomy 7:7

Deuteronomy 7:7-8 -- "[7] The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye [were] the fewest of all people: [8] But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt."

The word for love in Deuteronomy 7:7 is chashaq (Strong's #2836) in Hebrew. Brown-Driver-Briggs defines chashaq as: "... verb be attached to, love (... press together, desire ...)"

NAS Exhaustive Concordance defines chashaq as: "...have a desire (1), ... , longs (1), loved (1), pleased* (2), set his affection (1), set his love (1)."

Strong's Exhaustive Concordance includes this definition for chashaq: "... have a delight, have a desire, ... set in love ... to love, delight in; ... to deliver ..."

Webster's 1828 dictionary defines delight as: "... 1. To affect with great pleasure ; to please highly ; to give or afford high satisfaction or joy ; ... 2. To receive great pleasure in. ..." (Webster)

Abba Father God takes great pleasure in us (believers in Jesus). We actually give Him joy. He is pleased when we look to Him and trust in Him. Abba God greatly loves us and greatly delights in us. And, He will deliver us from the snares of the devil as we look to Him and obey Him (Psalm 34, Psalm 18).

This 1828 dictionary defines affection as: "... 4. ... a settled good will, love or zealous attachment ; as, the affection of a parent for his child." (Webster)

The same dictionary defines affectionate as: "1. Having great love, or affection ;..." (Webster)

Abba God is zealously attached to us and has good will and love toward us, His children. He is always our affectionate Abba Father God. And, God's love for us is unchanging. (See checed.)

Abba God holds us (believers in Jesus) next to His bosom (close to His breast) and embraces us with His loving arms (see chabab) because He is our affectionate, loving, Abba Father (See Galatians 4:6-7). We are His beloved sons and daughters, and His is our Abba Father God and Best Friend (see Aheb). (Proverbs 17:17, Proverbs 18:24).

______________________

In His great, Fatherly love for us, Abba God cherishes us believers (see chabab). He has tenderness and affection for us. We are very dear to God, and He has warm feelings toward us, and holds us in His affectionate embrace. Abba God the Father hides in His bosom those who rest in Him because He is the loving, caring Abba Father. He comforts us as we look to Him and rest in His embrace. (Abba God gives grace and peace to us believers. He also gives us comfort and consolation. See 2 Corinthians 1:2-4.)

We need to focus on who God is and place into His hands the lies we have believed about Him (2 Corinthians 10:5). God is love, according to 1 John 4:16. He has great, longing, personal, tender, delighting-in-us, affectionate phileó love for believers (if we love Jesus. See John 16:27). But, He also has great, benevolent, affectionate agapé love, which is unconditional love, both for born-again Christians and lost souls (John 3:16).
